Restarting Your Career After Divorce |
|
As a mother going through a divorce, you may find yourself either wanting or needing to re-enter the workforce. Either way, it can be a daunting prospect. But re-entering the workplace doesn’t have to feel like re-entering the earth’s atmosphere in a space shuttle. In other words it doesn’t have to be a bumpy ride. Here are 5 ways to help make it a smooth transition.
Be Careful What You Think
If you think you can, you will. If you think you can’t, you won’t. Your self-talk is key to creating your new life. So, be careful what you think.
Don’t Be Stuck in the Past
You may have been at the top of your game 5 years ago, but things will have moved on since then. Be open and willing to learn because frankly, no-one likes a know-it-all.
Flattery Will Get You Everywhere
This is the time to re-visit your contacts to see if they can help find the right job for you, even if you haven’t seen them in a while. Think of them as your support team and tell them that’s what they are to you. They will be much more willing to help than if you show up out of the blue suddenly asking for a favour.
Get Clear
Getting really clear about what you want, and how each person in your support team can help you is a much better and, let’s face it, more enjoyable way to find your next job than filling in endless application forms on the internet. Time and time again I see the perfect job open up for clients who are clear about what they want, and feeling confident.
Find Your Confidence
The chances are your confidence has gone into hiding. You may want to get a date (preferably one who is ten years younger), take up belly dancing or join a choir. In other words, do whatever it takes to get out of your comfort zone and reclaim your confidence in the ‘Lost and Found’ section of your memory bank. Remembering how confidence feels will be worth it, and if you take up my suggestions you may even have fun along the way!
Adopt all these suggestions and you can have employers looking for you rather than the other way round.
