Holidays can be magical times however they can also put lots of stress on relationships. Most relationships break down over holiday periods. So why is this?
Do we understand each other’s expectations? Should we compromise or is one party going to feel frustrated? Have we a vision of what a great holiday should look like and does this match our partner’s vision? So how do we avoid a potential relationship disaster?
Here are a few thoughts that might help.
Communication is key, so plan and discuss options. Maybe both parties come to the table with an outline of a plan and present it to the other without judgement.
Compromise - Be prepared to compromise, and remember that if both parties agree on 75% it is better than one person feeling beaten up.
Personalities - Understand each other's personality traits, often one party may be more dominant and one more reserved or submissive. Both parties must be heard. So if you are the dominant personality, try to avoid using harsh emotive language, and if you are submissive, learn to share your feelings and views.
Personal Space - Often during a normal week we spend time apart. Why then when we are on holiday do you expect to be together 24/7? Certain people require space to renew and are then able to enjoy the company of others. It doesn’t mean they don’t want to spend time with you so during the planning make sure that this is discussed.
Having a break - Remember that you both need a break from routine so make sure tasks are divided. It might be that one party gets a break from say work and the other party may still have normal routines to perform. It is important that you both feel refreshed.
Conflict - There will inevitably be conflict, and having a process to deal with this is crucial. So discuss how to ensure that molehills do not become mountains. As the old adage states, failing to plan is planning to fail. Try and communicate, effectively creating a strong plan created by both of you, and enjoy your holidays.
