If you want mediation to work for you follow these tips.
1. Have courage - you will need courage as you embark on a new journey full of uncertainties
2. Commit yourself - the journey will not necessarily be easy but it will be worthwhile
3. Do you research - build your confidence by finding out what is instore from the mediator. There are some great website and the mediator should be able to signpost you to some great resources.
4. Take your time - Take your time to reassure yourself that this is the right thing to do.
5. Ask lots of questions - Ask questions rather than make assumptions about what you think might be involved.
6. Keep an open mind - When everything is so new, keep an open mind.
7. Consider what your ex partner might be feeling and needs - This doesn’t mean you have to give them what they want
8. Seek to understand before asking to be understood - Listen to what your ex partner wants before making any demands of your own. You might be surprised.
9. Manage your emotions - Try to avoid reacting. Try to manage your emotional responses if possible so your brain can function properly.
10. Prepare properly - Use the intake meeting with the mediator on your own to prepare yourself properly for the mediation. By doing this and more you stand a much better chance of succeeding in mediation and saving yourself a small fortune in legal fees.
